Cold Soldering Iron
A cold heat solder iron can be considered to be one form of a micro soldering iron. It has many similar features to that of a micro iron. Both forms are portable, small in size and are battery operated. The iron works by completing a circuit through the tip when it is connected to the surfaces to be soldered.
The biggest difference is that a cold soldering iron has a different tip to that of regular irons which gives it the trademark cold heat feature. In regular irons, micro or large, the heating tips are made of metal, usually nickel-plated copper. But in a cold solder iron, the tip is made of ceramic, which heats up and cools down very quickly.
Though the cold heat solder iron has a few different features, it needs more careful handling than other irons. The tip, made of soft ceramic, breaks easily if too much pressure is exerted. The cold heat iron is a good tool to do very small soldering jobs, but cannot be used in electrical circuit boards.
RadioShack is the only manufacturer of cold heat soldering irons. But the company has licensed its product to Weller, a well-known soldering iron manufacturer, and is sold under the Weller banner.
